SOLVING POWER STEERING PROBLEMS

Fluid is the lifeblood of the steering system.  It is also the most overlooked part of the system.  A
change in the color of fluid indicates a steering problem.  The following colors of power steering fluid
should be corrected:

    A)  A milky appearance means the fluid is contaminated with water.  Possible causes include
radiator leaks, cooler connections, missing shrouding, heat exchanger leaks and defective
    reservoir caps.

    B)  A black or burnt appearance could mean a low fluid level, incorrect hose sizes, contaminate
build up, excessive pump wear, insufficient pump capacity, insufficient cooling, system fluid
    restriction or excessive overloading.

    C)  Foaming oil is a sign of air entrapment.  Possible causes include low fluid level, pump seal
wear, incorrect hoses, excessive pump wear, reservoir filter clogging, reservoir container leaks,
hard return hoses (sucking air), leaking reservoir suction fittings or hard internal gear seals
    (sucking air).

Periodic inspection and maintenance of your steering system is a must for smooth operation.
