REPLACING WHEEL SEALS UNNECESSARILY
Wheel oil seals should not be replaced unnecessarily. Seals should be replaced only if they leak, not
if they weep. However, weeping seals do indicate a potential problem around the corner, so keep a
close eye on that weeping wheel seal. Ask yourself what would cause a weeping seal? It can be
excessive hub pressure, excessive bearing end play or contaminated lubrication. A weeping seal has
a small amount of oil on the housing around the seal, and the oil level is normal. A leaking seal has
oil dripping or running from the seal area with oil splattered on the axle and surrounding area, and the
oil level is low. Leaking seals must be replaced while weeping seals need not be serviced.
